It was a record year for the 15th Annual Big-To-Do at Zoo Atlanta, benefiting the Children’s Program of Visiting Nurse | Hospice Atlanta. Over 1,000 Atlantans gathered on April 30 to raise over $150,000, the largest amount ever. Presented by HomeLife Communities, Inc., the Big-To-Do was chaired by Susan Been and Paige Tabaka Vohs.
Guests were treated to a fun afternoon at the Zoo, a delicious meal from LowCountry Barbecue and dessert treats from Costco. Kids in the audience enjoyed dancing to the sounds of The Gentlemen of Swing and visits from Johnny Bravo from the Atlanta Braves; Thrash and Harry the Hawk from Atlanta Spirit; Hairy Dawg from the University of Georgia and a Chick-fil-A cow. A special thank you to Monkey Joe's for donating a "Jumpy Jump" that contributed tons more fun!
Also, for the first time, the Big-To-Do featured a silent auction for the entire family. AirTran Airways donated a round trip for four. Other popular items included autographs from Peyton Manning and NASCAR driver Rusty Wallace, services from Atlanta's favorite salons and spas, a family getaway to Tennessee, and Clubhouse ticket books to the TOUR Championship.
Visiting Nurse | Hospice Atlanta's Children's Program served 473 pediatric patients in 2005. It is a comprehensive medical program that addresses the unique healthcare needs of children and their families. Visiting Nurse | Hospice Atlanta’s Children’s Program includes Georgia’s first Children’s Hospice and Palliative Care program, launched in 1991. With an interdisciplinary team of experienced pediatric hospice professionals, this program is designed to maintain the optimum quality of life for children through 21 years of age living with or dying from terminal illnesses. The comprehensive services provided by Visiting Nurse | Hospice Atlanta’s Children’s Hospice program include professional pediatric nursing care, emotional counseling, pastoral care, pain management and symptom control, residential and respite care, coordination of medical equipment and supplies, family education and training and bereavement support.
In acute situations, care is also provided at the Hospice Atlanta Center, the largest residential hospice facility in Georgia. The goal of the Hospice Atlanta Center is to keep the children comfortable as possible in a residential, home-like setting, surrounded by loved ones, friends, family, pets and toys.
Thanks to the wonderful success of the Big-To-Do, Children’s Program services are provided regardless of the patient family’s financial status or ability to pay.
