Visiting Nurse Health System Celebrates 60 Years
Serving the Metro Atlanta Community
For 60 years, Visiting Nurse Health System has served metro Atlanta with quality home health care and, starting in 1983, with compassionate end-of-life care. Over the years, the region has come to rely on us as a trusted friend.
Our History
Visiting Nurse Health System was founded in 1948, the same year as the World Health Organization and just two years after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (then the Communicable Disease Center). Since then, we have served hundreds of thousands of patients.
Starting with only two staff nurses 60 years ago, Visiting Nurse Health System now has 400 clinicians, part of a total staff of 600.
In 1996, we partnered with the community to build the 36-bed Hospice Atlanta Center. This beautiful inpatient hospice facility in Brookhaven was recently renovated. Also in 1996, we established our Care Management Services unit when we won the bid from the Atlanta Regional Commission to serve older adults and people with disabilities.
The Growth of Home Health
Our home health division has changed dramatically since 1948. It now includes caring for patients with complex medical issues that just a few years ago would have been handled only in a hospital setting.
Today, people undergoing surgery spend less time in the hospital and therefore need more care at home, post-surgery. Increases in medical outpatient procedures also require more follow-up care, and chronic illnesses like diabetes and congestive heart failure can now be managed effectively at home. Even the more complex interventions like infusion therapy, nutritional therapy and advanced wound care are now routinely provided in the home.
After 60 years we continue to be guided by our charitable mission to provide quality, comprehensive home health services to patients of all ages, diagnoses and financial means.
It is a mission we are committed to fulfill for another 60 years, and beyond.
